The Chemical Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China held a meeting on the final review and financial acceptance of major projects funded by the National Natural Science

On February 26, 2025, the Chemical Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China organized the 2024 National Natural Science Foundation Major Project Completion Review and Financial Acceptance Meeting in Beijing. Academician Wu Lizhu, Deputy Director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Yang Junlin, Executive Deputy Director of the Department of Chemical Science, presided over the opening ceremony, and Zhan Shige, Deputy Director, attended the meeting.

Vice Director Wu Lizhu pointed out in her speech that major projects are aimed at addressing major scientific issues in the forefront of science, national economic, social, technological development, and national security needs. The goal is to fully play a supporting and leading role through interdisciplinary and comprehensive research, and enhance China's ability to innovate at the source of basic research. The major projects that have been approved for funding have gone through a long-term brewing process and strict selection procedures, gathering a large number of capable, thoughtful, passionate, and courageous scientists. We hope that the attending experts will carefully review the relevant materials, strictly grasp the evaluation criteria, and comprehensively evaluate the completion of the project in this final report. Vice Director Wu Lizhu emphasized that 2025 is the final year of the 14th Five Year Plan and the beginning year of the 15th Five Year Plan. This meeting is not only a summary of the achievements of the project over the past five years, but also a prospect for future research work. I hope that project team members can condense more representative and creative research directions in their respective fields, so as to guide China's technological development in the next five years.

Yang Junlin, Executive Vice Director, emphasized that major projects are an important type of project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China's "Exploration, Talent, Tools, and Integration" four in one funding pattern. Their research content should have a scientific attribute of focusing on the forefront and demand driven, and their research paradigm should have the characteristics of exploring new paths and breaking through bottlenecks, so as to promote the development of emerging disciplines in interdisciplinary research fields. We hope that experts can provide valuable opinions and suggestions around the project positioning and review points, to help the project team further refine scientific issues, examine the academic value of the project, enhance the scientific and forward-looking nature of research, and promote the creation of new research ideas and paradigms. He also reminded that financial acceptance should focus on the rationality and standardization of the use of project funds.

After listening to reports from project leaders and project participants, as well as reviewing review materials, the project review expert group discussed and inquired, and put forward targeted opinions and suggestions. The financial review expert group conducted an acceptance of the use of funds for each project.

Review experts, major project leaders, and key members, as well as relevant staff from the Finance Bureau and Chemical Science Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, attended the meeting.
