The 711th Xiangshan Science Conference was successfully held in Beijing

The 711th Xiangshan Science Conference was successfully held in Beijing on December 19-20, 2024. Under the guidance of NSFC, the conference was jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Institute of Advanced Research and the National Agenda 21 Management Center of NSFC (hereinafter referred to as the "21st Century Center"), with the theme of "basic science and cutting-edge technology needs for high-quality carbon neutrality". The executive chairman of the meeting was jointly served by academician Dou Xiankang, director of NSFC, academician Xu Nanping, director of Suzhou Laboratory, academician Liu Zhongmin, director of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, academician Nie Zuoren, president of Beijing University of Technology, and researcher Wei Wei, president of Shanghai Institute of Advanced Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Lan Yujie, member of the Party Group and Deputy Director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

Vice Director Lan Yujie pointed out in his speech that basic research is the cornerstone to support and lead the achievement of carbon neutrality goals. The National Natural Science Foundation of China deeply understands and implements the central decision-making and deployment, strengthens the top-level design of carbon neutrality basic research, releases the "Guidelines for Basic Research on Dual Carbon", organizes the preparation of the "Roadmap for the Development of Carbon Neutrality Technology", plans to promote key special initiatives related to carbon neutrality, accurately grasps the main direction of carbon neutrality, continuously optimizes the layout of basic research, deploys a number of "dual carbon" projects through multiple funding channels, and supports the implementation of international scientific programs initiated by China. The National Natural Science Foundation of China will further strengthen organized basic research, promote international scientific and technological cooperation for carbon neutrality, rely on national strategic scientific and technological forces to promote technological innovation, and provide solid scientific and talent support for achieving carbon neutrality goals with high quality.

Academician Liu Zhongmin delivered a speech on behalf of the Executive Chairman. He pointed out that achieving carbon neutrality goals requires breaking the path dependence on traditional energy and industrial processes, exploring the construction of low-carbon and zero carbon energy systems, low-carbon and zero carbon industrial processes, non carbon dioxide greenhouse gas reduction, and negative emission technology systems. We look forward to the attending experts conducting in-depth discussions on the basic science and cutting-edge technology needs of carbon neutrality, condensing major scientific issues, grasping the direction of cutting-edge technology, and colliding new ideas, methods, and paradigms through exchanges. This will provide important references for the deployment of scientific and technological innovation in the forefront of carbon neutrality in China and help achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.

Academician Xu Nanping delivered a keynote speech entitled "Several Thoughts on Technology Support Leading Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality", pointing out that the essence of achieving the "dual carbon" goal is to get rid of dependence on carbon containing mineral resources, and the key lies in the support and guidance of scientific and technological innovation. The report system elaborates on the progress and needs of China's scientific and technological innovation in the "dual carbon" field, and proposes the urgent need to build a landmark carbon neutrality technology indicator system that meets China's strategic needs and actual national conditions, clarify the milestone goals of various core technologies, and provide clear guidance for the deployment of scientific and technological innovation. The report emphasizes that innovation in research paradigms is a key engine for achieving original breakthroughs in basic research, and the driving role of emerging technologies such as AI should be fully explored. At the same time, efforts should be made to promote the integration of "science technology engineering" innovation to support the high-quality achievement of carbon neutrality goals.

This conference focused on three central topics, namely "Carbon Neutrality Basic Science and Common Support System", "Frontier Technologies and Trends in Process Reengineering of Key Industries and Fields", and "Frontier Technologies and Trends in Carbon Sequestration and Negative Emissions". Three topic review reports, 15 special reports, and corresponding discussion and exchange sessions were arranged. The conference system reviewed the research status and development trends of basic science and cutting-edge technologies in the field of carbon neutrality, further condensed major scientific problems that urgently need to be solved, identified key technological bottlenecks and innovation directions, and put forward specific suggestions to strengthen carbon neutrality technology innovation, providing useful references for improving the layout of carbon neutrality basic research in China.

Academician Yu Guirui, Academician Xie Zaiku, Academician Tang Guangfu, Academician Zhu Jiaojun, and more than 60 experts, scholars and representatives of relevant departments from more than 30 universities, research institutions and enterprises in China, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, National Climate Center, National Climate Strategy Center, and relevant institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the meeting.
